LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 has been out for a little while now, but the folks at Traveler’s Tales are keeping the momentum moving with character DLC packs. The Out of time character pack includes seven new characters packed with fun abilities and attacks to help spice up your gameplay in Chronopolis or Level Free Play.
This DLC Pack takes its inspiration from Marvel’s “Champions” comic. We’ve had the ability to play as Ms. Marvel and Miles Morales from release, but now some of their allies join the ever-expanding roster of selectable characters (no Cyclops yet, but here’s hoping the Fox-Disney deal will add some mutant blood before all the DLC content is finished). With nine new characters including some fan favorites, there’s definitely a lot of value in this DLC pack!
Champions Character Pack DLC Includes:
- Totally Awesome Hulk / Amadeus Cho
- Hawkeye (Kate Bishop)
- Wasp (Nadia Pym)
- Moon Girl
- Devil Dinosaur
Our review: With such a vast selection of characters added in this DLC, it’s worth giving each of them a quick reaction and rundown:
Totally Awesome Hulk / Amadeus Cho: It would have been easy for TT to just throw together a copy of the Hulk we already had but they really did a number here. From the sounds he makes to the electrical charges that occur when he punches and jumps, this really is a “totally awesome” version of the character. The Thor Ragnarok Hulk model was my go-to Hulk in the game, but this one definitely takes his place.
Sparky: A flying dog?!?!?! It’s been easy to overlook the game’s other four-legged characters (Lockjaw and Cosmo) but Sparky is a lot of fun, if for no other reason than to fly around with him. He also gets technology and teleport abilities, instantly rendering him more awesome than Lockjaw. Sorry puppers.
Hawkeye (Kate Bishop): Hawkeye isn’t a big part of Marvel 2, which felt weird since he was a main character from early on in the first game. This version has a cool super attack, but feels underwhelming among the other heroes.
Ironheart: We may have reached the point of Iron Man saturation. Sure, he had plenty of suits in the first game, and only two to begin with in the sequel, but now we’re up to at least six Iron Man armors and the only real thing that separates this one from most of the others is that she has a very feminine pose when she’s standing around. Still, I guess we have to have an Iron Man in here somewhere.
Nova: The Galactic Protector was an odd absence considering we get Nova Prime after playing through some of the Xandar missions. He’s a solid addition who makes sense given everything going on in Chronopolis. He’s another example of a character we should have had sooner and I’m glad to see him added to the roster.
Viv: You know how, once unlocked, Vision is one of those characters that can do just about anything? Well, here he is again, only in the body of a sixteen-year-old girl. She’s pretty awesome and her attack animations are really well done.
Wasp (Nadia Pym): Other than the costume, there really is no big difference between this Wasp and the one in the main storyline. She’s useful and it’s fun to see her shrink down when she starts flying, but all you’re really getting here is a cosmetic difference. Especially with how they handled Hulk in this same DLC pack, it’s a bit disappointing.
Moon Girl: I’ll be honest: I knew nothing about this character before this pack and when I first selected her I was immediately turned off by her childlike appearance. That quickly gave way to joy when I watched all of her animations. Give her a chance – fight with her, fly with her, run (or skate) her around a bit. You’ll find she really captures the “fun” pieces we’ve seen before with things like Howard the Duck’s Iron Man armor.
Devil Dinosaur: He’s huge. He has almost no powers. Who cares? You get to be a frickin’ dinosaur!!! If you loved the epilogue level of the LEGO Ninjago Movie video game, this is almost a dream come true – become the dinosaur and smash all of Chronopolis. Muhahaha!!
